Certified Luxury Vehicle Repair Requirements
Infrastructure Upgrades, Specialized Tools & Precision Equipment
Repairing collision damage on luxury vehicles is significantly more challenging and meticulous than on standard vehicles.
This is due in part to the vehicle’s construction and technology, mandating the use of specialized tools, advanced equipment, cutting-edge technology, and dedicated infrastructure. Luxury vehicles are often constructed using advanced autobody materials that necessitate precision and expertise during repairs. Moreover, the integration of sophisticated electronic systems and sensors demands state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to ensure proper functionality post-repair.
Let’s look at a high-level overview of just some of the investments a collision repairer needs to make in infrastructure, tools and equipment to perform certified luxury repairs.
- Tools – up to Three Sets
Advanced materials require specialized tools which must be kept separate from tools used on steel to prevent cross-contamination. Centers may have to have up to three complete and separate sets of tools. - Riveting Systems
Rivets used for luxury repairs are high strength and low profile, and using these systems requires specialized training. - Mechanical Shop
To qualify for certification, some luxury OEMs require that collision centers operate a full-service shop able to perform mechanical repairs for their makes. - Updated Lighting
Both ceiling fixtures and portable lights may need to be upgraded. - Wi-Fi & Electrical
Luxury diagnostics require high-speed wireless internet covering the entire property, including the parking lot. Ensuring coverage may require upgrades to electrical systems. - Clean Room & Ventilation
Advanced materials require a clean room and ventilation system to prevent contamination, potential corrosion, and even help mitigate safety risks. Both aluminum dust and carbon fibers can become explosive if suspended in the air at high concentrations. - Precision Mounting Bench
Specialized platform systems may be necessary given the minimal tolerances required for repairing luxury vehicles. - Specialty Welder
Standard MIG welders are insufficient for repairs on luxury vehicles. The necessary specialized machines are more costly than standard MIG welders and require specialized training. - Argon & Helium Gases
Standard steel can be welded with affordable CO2 gas, but specialized Hi-Line bodies, including aluminum, require more costly helium, argon or mixes of these gases. - Diagnostic Tools & Subscriptions
Luxury repairs demand diagnostic equipment and manufacturer data, many of which have associated monthly or annual subscription costs.
Looking Forward
Once you realize how foundationally different a collision repair center for luxury vehicles is from a standard shop, it’s easy to understand why not every collision repairer can make the necessary upgrades.
In addition to the significant financial investment required, an appropriate center requires a much larger footprint to install a clean room(s), ventilation, a mechanical shop, and to store additional sets of tools and equipment.
Careful planning between collision repairers, carriers and automotive manufacturers is required to ensure there is sufficient collision repair coverage to meet the needs of drivers by market, but also to ensure that the region is not over-extended, lacking appropriate volume to support investments.
